Kids Martial Arts in Poulsbo
Classical Japanese martial arts for children (ages 5–9 and 10–14) that teach courage, integrity and self-discipline, all while having fun and staying active.

At Kitsap Martial Arts, we teach classical Japanese martial arts in a fun, structured environment that supports kids of all experience levels—whether they’re full of energy, a little shy, or somewhere in between.
Our kids martial arts program is designed for students ages 5–14 and focuses on helping them build confidence, coordination, focus, and respect. Classes are split by age to keep instruction age-appropriate and engaging. Younger students (5–9) learn through games, drills, and basic techniques that help them improve balance, listening skills, and self-control. Older students (10–14) take on more advanced movements, goal-setting, and self-defense training in a supportive, challenging setting.
Whether your child needs help breaking out of their shell, burning off extra energy, or developing focus and discipline, we provide a patient and encouraging environment committed to helping each student grow—on and off the mat.

FAQs
Can we come and watch a class?
When you sign up for a free trial you’re welcome to watch class if your child is feeling shy and not ready to participate. Usually after watching a class to see that it’s not scary and that kids are having fun they’ll want to join in.
Are Parents Allowed to stay and watch?
Absolutely! Parents are always welcome to stay in the dojo and watch their children in class. However, please refrain from sideline coaching even if you see your child making mistakes or losing focus.
What should my child wear to their trial classes?
Comfortable athletic clothing works great for trial classes paired with clean socks or clean bare feet.
A student uniform is included with a membership.
What kind of karate is this?
The short version, it’s not Karate, it’s Budo Taijutsu (Classical Japanese Jujutsu). Our full curriculum includes rolling/breakfalls, striking, joint manipulations, throws/takedowns, and classical Japanese weaponry. However, the curriculum will vary based on the age range for the class.
When will my kid earn a black belt?
The short version: we don’t have black belts for our kids program.
To reach shodan (black belt) level, a student must meet specific requirements as part of our adult martial arts class. This means a student would have to be at least 16 years old to participate in a black belt evaluation. A student who starts in the 5-9 age group and continues through to the adult program will have very little trouble achieving shodan.
